Gender Stereotypes

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

There’s an interesting column in the Washington Post Sports section today about Danica Patrick, the pretty female racecar driver who poses like a vamp for magazines and finished 8th out of 30-plus drivers in the Indy 500. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/27/AR2007052701269.html

Here’s a young woman who is more adept behind the wheel of a fast car than most guys, yet doesn’t mind dressing in leather and lying spread-eagled on top of a 1957 Chevy for a magazine. Sally Jenkins, the reporter, asks a good question: Is Patrick busting or perpetuating stereotypes?

One could ask the same thing about women hooking up: By acting like guys are they busting or perpetuating stereotypes? And whatever the answer, is it good or bad for individual women and women as a whole?
